Everything You Should Know About Custom LCD Displays

Do you know that the screen of the smartphone you're holding,  your laptop, your desktop, and your Television are all forms of Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD)?

Most of your devices with flat screens are made from custom LCD displays, which are flat electronic devices that contain liquid crystal particles which function to display signs, lights, and moving images.

However, Custom LCD displays do not produce light on their own but are illuminated by fluorescent backlights, which enable them to display icons on the flat screen of your devices.

If you fancy learning more about Custom LCD displays, then you're at the right place. In this article, we will walk you through everything you should know about Custom LCD displays.

Working Principle of LCD Displays

Custom LCD Displays are usually made up of an LCD panel, which has many layers consisting of electronic parts that function together to produce images on the screen.

The LCD panel is made up of a polarizer, a set of polarized glass, Liquid crystal display fluid, and conductive connections.

The working Principle is based on the polarization of the external light that passes into the LCD from the fluorescent backlights. This is because Liquid crystals cannot emit light on their own.

The light from the external backlight is passed through the polariser, which causes polarisation to occur. This is a process in which light waves are restricted to vibrate in only one plane.

Thus, passing the external light through the polariser of the LCD panel produces a polariser light. The polariser light then passes through a set of polarised glass, which contains liquid crystal particles in between them.

When an electric current is applied to the liquid crystal particles, they orient themselves in such a way that the polariser light passes from the first layer of polariser glass to the second layer.

This transformation causes a display of signs or images to occur on the screen of your device.

What Are The Types of Custom LCD Displays?

Custom LCDs can be designed in various ways. However, based on their working principles, they can be grouped into three types.

The three types of Custom LCD displays are:

Reflective LCD displays

These LCD displays work by reflection. They have a layer of mirror that reflects polarised light rays that pass through the LCD panel to produce visible patterns on the LCD screen.

Transmissive LCD Displays

Transmissive custom LCD displays have fluorescent backlights that emit light. The light is transmitted through the polarised glass of the LCD to generate visible patterns and images.

The fact that these types of LCD displays use backlights causes the images produced to appear dim when viewed under bright lights.

Transflective LCD Displays

As the name suggests, these types of Custom LCD displays use both reflection and transmission to generate images.

These LCD types have a blacklight and a mirror, thus they can be used both indoors and outdoors under bright lights.

Applications of Custom LCD Displays

I'm sure you're reading this article on a flat screen, and that's with the help of a Custom LCD.

Custom LCDs can be applied to several devices including:

· Wristwatches

· Smartphones

· Clocks

· Digital cameras

· Televisions and advertisement banners

· Sensors for measuring devices
